When thinking about building your garage, many thoughts come to mind: space, durability, affordability, and safety just to name a few. You want to make sure your vehicles and valued items are stored safely and effectively. When you build a garage out of shipping containers, you’re getting just that. Shipping containers are constructed of corten steel panels. The exterior coating on the panels allows them to withstand the elements. They are easily movable, so if you want to add more space or change your garage layout, you can conveniently do so. Depending on how large you want to go, you can utilize multiple containers to build your garage heaven! Check out the above shipping container garage from the movie Tron: Legacy. Now, here’s a few things you want think about before starting your Tron shipping container dream garage.
1.What kind of style are you going to build?
There are a few different ways people build container garages. Typically, you’ll place two containers as the outer beams, and build a roof over the two shipping containers. Or, just go straight Tron and place a shipping container as the roof as well. The two containers will provide lockable storage as well as a possible office/work space. The space below the roof will act as storage space for vehicles, tractors, machinery, etc.
If you don’t have or don’t need that much space, you can downsize and go a little more traditional and compact like the garage below.
2.What size containers will you use?
There are many different size containers you can use to build your container garage. First you need to decide what size you will purchase. They range in size from smaller 10’ containers to 45’ High Cube containers. The most standard size would either be a 20’ or a 40’ container. These containers are 20’ or 40’ long, 8’ wide, and 8.5’ high (click here for container specs). The 20’ container provides 1,165 cubic ft. of storage space and the 40’ provides 2,350 cubic ft. of interior space. Depending on how much space you have available, this decision will be very important in determining the overall size of your garage.
3.What Type of Containers Will You Use?
Next you will need to decide on the type of container. You can build with a new (one trip) container or a used container. New or “one trip” containers are the newest containers you can get. They are not used for international shipping service. They are loaded with cargo (one time) and shipped from the factory in China into the US. One trip containers are the way to go if you are concerned with aesthetics. If you want to cut down on the cost of the project a bit, we recommend going with used shipping containers. Used containers are abundant in supply and range in condition. Used containers will vary in color and typically show signs of wear and tear with some rust, dents and dings.
4.Will you add any custom modifications?
One of the best parts about constructing a garage with durable shipping containers is the ability to modify them to your exact needs and specifications.
Container modifications can include:
-
Increased security and lock boxes
-
Roll up and personnel doors
-
-
-
-
Heat/AC Units
-
-
Interior/Exterior paint
-
Exhaust fans and side vents
