Hydroponic Farming with a Shipping Container

By July 30th, 2020 Creative Uses No Comments

Shipping containers can be used in a variety of ways, including hydroponic farming. A number of companies are growing vegetables, herbs and other greens in a modified shipping container. They are outfitted with hydroponic systems that produce tremendous results while protecting the environment.

Hydroponics is a common method of growing that uses nutrient-rich water instead of soil. The roots of the plants are exposed to flowing water and simultaneously exposed to sun simulating light. This process typically uses 90% less water than traditional farming, reducing environmental impact. Indoor hydroponic farming also avoids limitations normally created by nature like extreme weather, pests and limited growing seasons.

cargo container farm can be placed almost anywhere, which closes the gap between the produce and consumer. Eliminating long transportation times, these units provide affordable fresh food to many places lacking a local farming industry. 40ft shipping containers are ideal to maximize production space. Container Golf Simulator

By December 18th, 2019 Creative Uses No Comments

The majority of golfers will do whatever is necessary to take a couple of strokes off their game. Is the driving range too far from your house?  Do the golf balls at the range look like they haven’t been changed out in a year?

Why not modify a shipping container into a custom golf simulator.

You can utilize a 20’ or 40’ container to make your perfect course at home. By cutting a sidewall, adding some leveling posts and retrofitted a hydraulic door, you can create a completely self-contained unit that doesn’t take up too much space.

Lining the floor with astroturf or other options for artificial grass can give you that realistic feel of a tee box or fairway.

The container will need to be modified with lighting and electricity in order to power the necessary components. The hardest part is choosing the right simulator for you. There many factors around finding the right option but the folks at Mygolfspy.com offer some helpful information: A Golfers Guide For Building a Home Golf Simulator. Even if a simulator is not an option, a simple practice net can serve the same purpose (just fewer bells and whistles).

The best part about a custom container conversion is that you can make this as personal as you like.  This can be achieved by adding a fresh coat of paint, additional entry doors or even some windows for natural light.  You can even divide the simulator into two sections and have some storage as well.  These can also be temporary if you want to take the container to a different location.

At Container Technology Inc. we can help you create a custom container to meet your needs.  Give us a call at (877) 670-0229 or complete an online quote.  Let us make your next container project a hole in one!

Containers for Pop-Up Shops – 20ft Open Side Container

By April 3rd, 2019 Creative Uses No Comments

Pop-up Shops also known as Flash Retailing, is a trend of opening a short-term retail space.  These shops can be used for anything from art, fashion, museums, the tech industry or restaurants.  They offer a quick way to create a lasting impression on customers.  These pop-up shops have become a popular option for retailers. It allows them to position their products in front of their target audience; like festivals, concerts and sporting events.

Many of these retailers are utilizing Shipping Containers as an option to create their buzz.  One type of container to consider for this is a 20ft Open Side Container. A 20ft open side container is a versatile option, as the whole 20ft sidewall can open up.  The doors swing open to a 270 degree angle to create a spacious and welcoming interior space. The best part of utilizing a 20ft open side container, is it can easily be buttoned up when not in use.  Simply close the open side door and lock up the container.

A 20ft open side container is easily transportable as well.  You can pack up your pop-up shop and transport it or move it to the next festival, trade show or just about anywhere.  The 20ft open side containers also come in a “high cube” version as well. The high cube containers are 9ft 6in tall on the exterior (as opposed to a standard height container, which is 8ft 6in tall).  Since the entire sidewall opens up, these containers allow for easy loading of oversized cargo as well.

At Container Technology Inc. we offer 10’, 20’, 40’, 45, and 53’ container sizes.  We also offer a wide range of modifications, to meet the specific requirements of your project. Give us a call today at (877) 670-0229 or fill out an online quote.  We can provide you with the right container for your project!

Why Shipping Containers Should be Your Next Garage

By March 29th, 2017 Creative Uses 13 Comments

Why Shipping Containers Should be Your Next Garage

When thinking about building your garage, many thoughts come to mind: space, durability, affordability, and safety just to name a few. You want to make sure your vehicles and valued items are stored safely and effectively. When you build a garage out of shipping containers, you’re getting just that. Shipping containers are constructed of corten steel panels.  The exterior coating on the panels allows them to withstand the elements. They are easily movable, so if you want to add more space or change your garage layout, you can conveniently do so. Depending on how large you want to go, you can utilize multiple containers to build your garage heaven! Check out the above shipping container garage from the movie Tron: Legacy.

Now, here’s a few things you want think about before starting your Tron shipping container dream garage.

  1.  What kind of style are you going to build?

There are a few different ways people build container garages. Typically, you’ll place two containers as the outer beams, and build a roof over the two shipping containers. Or, just go straight Tron and place a shipping container as the roof as well. The two containers will provide lockable storage as well as a possible office/work space. The space below the roof will act as storage space for vehicles, tractors, machinery, etc.

If you don’t have or don’t need that much space, you can downsize and go a little more traditional and compact like the  garage below.

  1. What size containers will you use?

There are many different size containers you can use to build your container garage. First you need to decide what size you will purchase. They range in size from smaller 10’ containers to 45’ High Cube containers. The most standard size would either be a 20’ or a 40’ container. These containers are 20’ or 40’ long, 8’ wide, and 8.5’ high (click here for container specs). The 20’ container provides 1,165 cubic ft. of storage space and the 40’ provides 2,350 cubic ft. of interior space. Depending on how much space you have available, this decision will be very important in determining the overall size of your garage.

  1. What Type of Containers Will You Use?

Next you will need to decide on the type of container. You can build with a new (one trip) container or a used container. New or “one trip” containers are the newest containers you can get.  They are not used for international shipping service.  They are loaded with cargo (one time) and shipped from the factory in China into the US.  One trip containers are the way to go if you are concerned with aesthetics.  If you want to cut down on the cost of the project a bit, we recommend going with used shipping containers.  Used containers are abundant in supply and range in condition. Used containers will vary in color and typically show signs of wear and tear with some rust, dents and dings.

  1. Will you add any custom modifications?

One of the best parts about constructing a garage with durable shipping containers is the ability to modify them to your exact needs and specifications.

    Container modifications can include:

  • Increased security and lock boxes
  • Roll up and personnel doors
  • Insulation and flooring
  • Lighting and electrical packages
  • Shelving
  • Heat/AC Units
  • Windows
  • Interior/Exterior paint
  • Exhaust fans and side vents

“Blowin’ In The Wind” In a Shipping Container

By December 20th, 2016 Creative Uses No Comments

Ford has always promoted creativity and encouraged employees to imagine and develop innovative solutions. Ford has just introduced a mobile wind tunnel made out of shipping containers.“This project was born from a desire to be the best when it comes to controlling and limiting the cabin noise customers are so sensitive to,” Bill Gulker, Ford wind noise core supervisor, said in a statement. “Our new mobile wind tunnel saves our engineer’s time and increases productivity. It’s a fine example of the innovation mindset we’re trying to incorporate into everything we do.” These wind tunnels are vital to grasping the intricate details of aerodynamics. Airflow can affect everything from the fuel economy to cabin noise. Cutting down the cabin noise will enhance the customer’s driving experience and lead to greater customer satisfaction all around.

Creating a wind tunnel allows engineers to analyze every little detail and cuts down the testing cycles from weeks to hours. Despite their incredible usefulness, wind tunnels can be quite large and very expensive. Finding a way to create a mobile wind tunnel made out of shipping containers is both cost effective and very useful in identifying problems early on. The mobility of the containers allows the cars to be yanked from the assembly line and tested on-site.

Ford has hopes that this mobile solution will shorten the amount of time necessary to find the problems and implement fixes. Ford’s main wind tunnel is the size of an office building and costs to build it was $50 million. The mobile wind tunnel is constructed of two 53 foot long shipping containers and can be moved anywhere. Two six-foot-diameter fans powered by 250-horsepower electric motors can generate winds of up to 80 mph. The two containers are held together side by side on a flat area of the pavement. Another 40-foot container houses an office, power distribution, and controls. The whole entire assembly can be easily taken down in a day and then put back together at a whole new site in as little as six hours.

At Container Technology, Inc. our staff has over 75 years combined experience in the storage container industry. For more information about standard ISO containers or general container modifications please give us a call at (877) 670-0229 or fill out an online quote form.
