Build a School Out of Shipping Containers

By July 25th, 2015 Creative Uses 11 Comments

Shipping containers are a superior building material due to their durability, portability, low cost, and sustainability. Due to these benefits, shipping containers have been modified and transformed into buildings used for numerous applications including residences, offices, art spaces, pop-up shops, and restaurants.

The benefits that shipping containers provide as a building material also extend to educational facilities. These four schools made out of shipping containers inspire with their high design, safety, and sustainability.

Waldorf Costa Mesa School

Waldorf-Costa-Mesa-School-2 When the Costa Mesa Waldorf School in California decided to expand, they chose to use shipping containers due to their sustainability. The school used shipping containers to create a new wing of eco-conscious buildings. The project utilized 32 shipping containers to create an additional 4 buildings on their campus. In addition to extra classroom space, the new additions include a library, 2-story auditorium, and a science lab.

The Fawood Children’s Center in London utilizes shipping containers to create a bright and cheerful space for children and adult learners. Created by Urban Space Management, the Fawood Children’s Center provides childcare for 3-5 year olds, autistic and special needs children, and adult learning services. The innovative mesh outer-shell of the Fawood Children’s Center conceals three three-story interconnected classroom structures made out of shipping containers in the interior space of the building.

Vissershok Container Classroom-South Africa

vissershok-3-photos-6.jpeg.650x0_q70_crop-smart This shipping container classroom is a prime example of the adaptability, durability, and low cost of shipping containers. The classroom was sponsored by three South African companies for use in an impoverished rural township outside of Cape Town. Using a shipping container allowed the firm Tsai Design Studio to maximize their limited budget and create a functional and durable space that allows for multiple uses. This shipping container classroom is designed not only to provide classroom space but also space for a garden that will supplement school meals, a play area with a swing and other equipment, and a gathering area for lunches and school assemblies.

Shooters Hill School-London

shootershill2010 Whether you are using your shipping container for storage or modifying it for another use, a key advantage with shipping containers is their easy and efficient scalability. When Shooters Hill School in London decided to expand, this benefit was a key part of their reasoning behind choosing shipping containers. This attractive and welcoming new addition was installed on the school campus in only two days and added 7,200 sq. ft. of additional classrooms and workshop space.

Hi! I have two shipping containers (40 x 8) sitting on a lot in Guatemala.
I want to build a wooden house above or up top of the containers.
The containers are 13 feet apart….can they hold a wooden house that would be 40 x 32 feet.
We realize that the weight of the house would have to sit on a solid base so that it does not sink the container….
    Thank you for your response.

    Hello Judy,
Thanks for the inquiry. I apologize for the delayed response. We had some issues with the email address we had on file to receive notifications. Unfortunately, we do not have an engineer or an architect on staff. You would most likely need to consult with either or both, to determine if your concept can be carried out. It’s definitely a possibility. However, we would not be able to advise you on whether or not it can be done. I’m sorry we are not more help. Ray

    Hello Fernando,
Thanks for finding us. We posted this article in the Creative Uses section of our website. We like to highlight some of the creative ways that containers are being used. Unfortunately, we would not be able to assist you in building a school. Our conversion/modification capabilities are limited to single container projects. However, you might have some luck finding a company the Houston or San Antonio area. Check out this website – http://npsa.org/ You can do a search to find companies in that area. Hope this helps! Dear Sir,

our church need extra Sunday School Classroom but unfortunately, we do not have enough budget for that. I think the shipping container classroom will be very good for us at this moment. Could you please give us estimate for the 3 X 40ft container combined classroom. or if you have your read-made classroom design, that would be very good for us to review.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Best Regards,
    Dong Kim
